EN 1149-5 Antistatic Standard: Shielding Firefighters Against Invisible Risks

Firefighters face more than heat and flames. In certain environments, static electricity can also become a safety concern.
EN 1149-5 is a European standard for electrostatic dissipative protective clothing. It specifies requirements for materials and garment design to help prevent the accumulation of electrostatic charges and allow them to dissipate in a controlled manner.
During incidents involving flammable gases, fuels, chemicals, or other potentially explosive atmospheres, an uncontrolled electrostatic discharge may create an ignition risk. Antistatic properties can therefore provide an additional layer of protection in these environments.
For firefighter clothing, EN 1149-5 works alongside other protective requirements, such as EN 469 for protection against heat and flame. It does not replace flame protection—it addresses a different hazard.
