Standard Operating Procedures for Gear Decontamination & Advanced Washing
The Critical Risk of Contamination
There is an old saying on the station floor: "A dirty suit shows your experience." But in modern firefighting, a dirty suit is a compromised suit. Soiled turnout gear carries massive hidden operational liabilities. Soot, hydrocarbon build-up, and smoke deposits drastically reduce the garment’s thermal insulation, accelerate heat and electrical conduction, and destroy water-repellent capabilities. Furthermore, fireground particulates contain highly volatile carcinogens and dermal toxins, making strict adherence to decontamination protocols vital for long-term health.
Decontamination and Advanced Washing Protocols
To avoid cross-contamination and preserve material integrity, garments must undergo a multi-tiered cleaning process immediately following any deployment.
Routine Decontamination
① Debris Removal
Gently shake or brush the shell to dislodge loose surface particulate matter.
② Pre-Rinsing
Utilize a low-pressure hose or utility sink to thoroughly rinse off surface soot. If using a sink, drain and refill the water iteratively until the runoff remains completely clear.
③ Targeted Spot-Cleaning
Hand-scrub heavily soiled sections with a soft-bristled brush. Avoid direct friction on knitted wristlets, reflective trims, and internal moisture barriers.
Advanced Machine Washing
When routine cleaning is insufficient, advanced mechanical washing must be applied.
④ Prepare the Garment
Secure all hardware mechanisms, pocket closures, hook-and-loop fasteners, snaps, and zippers. Turn the entire garment completely inside out and encapsulate it within a protective mesh laundry bag.
⑤ Clean the Washer Drum First
Run an empty pre-wash cycle to remove any residual contaminants before introducing bunker gear.
⑥ Load the Protected Garment
Place the mesh laundry bag containing the turnout gear into a front-loading or tumble washing machine. Never wash firefighting gear together with personal or civilian garments.
⑦ Select Proper Washing Settings
Use a gentle cycle with low rotational speed. The water temperature must not exceed 40°C (104°F).
⑧ Perform the Washing Cycle
Allow the machine to complete the full wash cycle under the specified settings.
⚠️ Critical Maintenance Restrictions
Never Dry Clean
Do not subject turnout gear to professional dry cleaning, as chemical solvents may damage flame-resistant finishes and material performance.
Use Only Approved Detergents
Only use specialized detergents with a stable pH range between 6.0 and 10.5.
Wear Appropriate PPE During Cleaning
Personnel conducting the cleaning must wear protective gloves and splash-proof eye/face protection.
